The 'Smash the Stigma' Community Water Balloon Fight is not only a fun and engaging activity for our community but also serves as a unique opportunity to raise awareness for International Overdose Awareness Day. Our event brings together members of our community, including local law enforcement and firefighters, who actively participate in the parade-style procession down Tellico Street, engaging with participants by shooting water from their vehicles and throwing water balloons. This interactive experience fosters community engagement and provides stress relief for our first responders, strengthening the bond between them and the community they serve.

We believe partnerships with local businesses and individuals like you are crucial in achieving our vision of eliminating substance misuse. Your involvement will make a meaningful difference in our community.

Thank you for considering this partnership opportunity. Together, we can make a positive impact on the well-being of our community.

‘Smash the Stigma’ Community Water Balloon Fight: BYOB

Bring your balloons

Against the backdrop of Overdose Awareness Month and International Overdose Awareness Day, the Monroe County Prevention Coalition (PWC) is excited to present the Third Annual 'Smash the Stigma' Community Water Balloon Fight. This unique and engaging event goes beyond a water balloon battle; it's a powerful initiative aimed at raising awareness about the preventable nature of drug overdose deaths and breaking down the stigma associated with substance misuse.

Why 'Smash the Stigma'?

In 2021, the United States witnessed a staggering 106,699 reported drug overdose deaths. Tennessee, including Monroe County, was significantly impacted, with reported fatal overdose deaths in Monroe County doubling from 14 in the previous year to 28 in 2021. These numbers underscore the urgent need to address the critical issue of drug overdoses.

Stigma, identified as a significant obstacle preventing individuals from seeking help for mental health and substance use disorders, perpetuates a harmful cycle of silence and suffering. The 'Smash the Stigma' event seeks to shatter this cycle by fostering a sense of community, understanding, and support. By coming together, we aim to create an environment that encourages open conversations about substance misuse, reduces judgment, and ultimately helps those in need.

What Can You Expect?

On Saturday, August 24th, 2024, at 4 pm, Tellico Street will transform into the battleground for the Third Annual 'Smash the Stigma' Community Water Balloon Fight. Participants are encouraged to bring their own filled water balloons and water guns, as there will not be a designated area for filling balloons on-site. The event route, extending from Cook Street down to Memorial Park, will create a vibrant and energetic atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. In addition to the parade route, Memorial Park will host food trucks and a resource fair, ensuring a lively and festive experience for everyone.

First responders will be driving along the route, engaging in friendly water balloon exchanges and adding an unexpected twist to the event. It's not just about getting wet; it's about making a splash against the stigma associated with substance misuse.

 How Can You Get Involved?

Whether you're a local resident, community leader, or someone passionate about raising awareness, 'Smash the Stigma' welcomes you. Bring your family, friends, and enthusiasm to Tellico Street on August 24th, 2024, at 4 pm, and let's unite for an evening of laughter, camaraderie, and advocacy.
